The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is Iowa State University’s focal point for transportation-related research, education, and outreach. InTrans is easily one of the ten largest university-based transportation programs in the U.S. Its research activities range from human factors to bridge design, its educational programs include students from disciplines in psychology to mechanical engineering, and its technology transfer program ranges from sharing techniques for highway construction work zone safety to integrating defense technology into transportation applications. The institute develops interdisciplinary project teams from across ISU’s colleges and departments, as well as from other universities, government agencies, transportation manufacturers, service providers, and consultants. In addition, InTrans has a thriving partnership arrangement with the Iowa Department of Transportation, managing significant aspects of the department’s research and development programs. The institute has several divisions: Advanced Transportation Technology, Transportation Planning and Information Systems, Outreach, Bridges and Structures, Policy, Traffic Safety and Engineering, and Pavements.
