The Family Transitions Project (FTP) is a 3-generation study of rural Iowa families that began in 1989. It addresses a community-based sample of over 2,400 participants including 500 cohort members (generation 2; G2 targets), their close-aged siblings, their parents (generation one; G1), their romantic partners, and their oldest biological child (generation 3; G3). The FTP originally began as a study of rural family response to the severe recession in the agricultural economy in the U.S. during the 1980s. The G2 youths from the original study were in 7th grade when the project began and are now in their 40s with families of their own.
